The American Dream: Danny Patel and the Story of Liquor World

When Danny Patel moved from India to California in 1999, he was searching for opportunity and a fresh start. Like many immigrants arriving in the United States, he began by working for someone else, taking a job with Cherokee International for two years while learning the business world and adjusting to a completely new life.

But Patel quickly realized he wanted something more.

“One day I decided I couldn’t work under somebody else anymore,” he shared.

That decision would eventually lead him across the country, through multiple business ventures, and ultimately to the Upper Cumberland, where he would go on to build one of Cookeville’s most recognizable local businesses, Liquor World.

After leaving Southern California, Patel moved to Northern California and purchased his first convenience store. Entrepreneurship came naturally to him, and owning his own business gave him both independence and purpose.

But it was a trip to Tennessee in 2004 that would ultimately change the direction of his life. Patel came to Cookeville to visit a cousin who lived in the area. During that visit, he saw something special in the growing Upper Cumberland community and felt drawn to the slower pace and welcoming atmosphere. Shortly after returning to California, he sold his store and relocated permanently to Cookeville in 2005.

Once settled, Patel wasted no time building his future. In 2006, he opened Jackson Tobacco before eventually relocating the business and rebranding it as Discount Tobacco. Around 2007 and 2008, he also reopened Wildwood Market on Highway 56, expanding his growing footprint within the community.

But the path was not without challenges. After Wildwood Market was robbed and an attempted shooting targeted Patel’s brother, the experience deeply impacted the family. Patel ultimately decided to step away from the gas station business, returning the store to its previous owner and refocusing his energy elsewhere.

That same season of transition opened the door to a new opportunity. In 2011, after liquor sales became legal in the area, Patel opened Liquor World. Over the years, the store has grown into far more than a retail business. For many local residents, it has become a familiar and trusted part of the community.

Beyond business, Patel has also remained committed to giving back. He supports organizations and initiatives throughout the Upper Cumberland, including the Cookeville Performing Arts Center Foundation Stevens Center efforts and Tennessee Tech’s art programs through donated auction items and community support.

From immigrating to the United States with a dream to building multiple businesses in Cookeville, Patel’s story reflects resilience, determination, and a belief in creating opportunity through hard work. Today, Liquor World stands not only as a successful business, but as part of the larger story of entrepreneurship and community growth across the Upper Cumberland.
