Inside The Painted House’s Lasting Legacy in Cookeville
For many in the Cookeville, a visit to The Painted House has become more than a shopping trip. A morning or afternoon spent perusing the shelves is an immersive experience rooted in inspiration, comfort, and connection. Over the past 15 years, the beloved local business has carved out a place not only within the regional retail scene but within the lives and homes of countless customers who return year after year.

Housed inside a charming two-story home, The Painted House immediately feels different from a traditional retail space. Each room invites customers to slow down, explore, and imagine how pieces might come to life within their own homes. From vintage finds and carefully curated décor to apparel, gifts, and baby items, the boutique offers a layered experience designed to feel warm and welcoming from the moment guests walk through the door.
“Customers often joke that they never want to leave, and that is exactly the feeling we hope to create,” said owner Kim Johnson. “The Painted House is designed to be a full lifestyle experience.”
Built Around the Feeling of Home
The atmosphere found at The Painted House stems directly from the vision behind the brand itself. At its core, the business is centered around a love of home and the feeling attached to it.
“Home is where we spend most of our time, so it should be a place you genuinely look forward to returning to,” Johnson shared. “That sense of warmth, comfort, and belonging is woven into everything we do.”

What began as an unexpected pivot during a difficult season eventually grew into one of the Upper Cumberland’s most recognizable retail destinations. After losing her job in corporate finance during the mid 2000s recession, Johnson leaned into a longtime passion for blending vintage and modern pieces together in a meaningful way.
“What started as a small passion project quickly grew as customers kept coming back and asking if we would be open more hours,” Johnson said. “That was the moment I realized this might be exactly what I was meant to do.”
Weathering Every Season Together
Over the years, The Painted House has dealt with economic uncertainty, natural disasters, and the rapid evolution of retail shopping. Through every challenge, Johnson says one thing remained constant: community support.
“Our customers carried us through a pandemic,” she said. “By embracing online shopping during one of the most uncertain times in recent history, they made sure The Painted House could survive and come out the other side.”

While trends constantly change, Johnson believes longevity comes from authenticity rather than chasing what is popular.
“You have to stay authentic,” she explained. “People come back to places that make them feel something.”
A Legacy That Feels Like Home
Today, emotional connection continues to define The Painted House. Customers who once visited as newlyweds now return shopping for growing families, creating generations of memories tied to the boutique itself.

“The Painted House is part of this community’s legacy because it has been a place where people come not just to shop, but to feel inspired, welcomed, and at home,” Johnson said. “That kind of bond does not just build a business, it builds something that lasts.”
