In moments of crisis, when children are removed from their homes and placed into foster or kinship care, the need for immediate support is not just practical, it is deeply personal. That is where the Upper Cumberland Foster Closet steps in, providing critical resources and compassionate care to families across the region.
At its core, the mission of Upper Cumberland Foster Closet is simple yet powerful: to ensure every child entering care feels safe, valued, and supported. Through a combination of essential resources, emotional encouragement, and community connection, the organization helps foster and kinship families navigate some of the most challenging transitions they will ever face.
Foster and kinship placements often happen with little notice. Families say yes to children in crisis, sometimes overnight, without the time or resources to prepare.
The Foster Closet meets these urgent needs head-on, providing clothing, shoes, diapers, hygiene items, school supplies, and even larger essentials like beds, mattresses, and car seats when available.
But their impact goes beyond meeting basic needs. Every item is given with intention, restoring dignity and offering children a sense of stability during uncertain moments.
Seasonal initiatives, including back-to-school events and holiday support, create an environment where children can experience normalcy and belonging, even in the midst of transition.
Each year, Upper Cumberland Foster Closet serves approximately 250 families, distributing thousands of essential items. In 2025 alone, more than 9,800 pieces of clothing were given to children in need.
Behind those numbers are real stories.
One foster mother recently welcomed two new placements, a teenage girl with special needs and a medically fragile infant. Facing overwhelming emotional and financial pressure, she turned to the Foster Closet for support.
Not only was she able to receive essential items for both children, but the organization also provided a much-needed baby swing, eliminating an immediate financial burden during an already stressful time.
For the teenage girl, something as simple as choosing jewelry became a moment of joy and normalcy. For the caregiver, it was reassurance that she was not alone.
This is the heart of the Foster Closet’s work, meeting urgent needs while creating moments of relief, dignity, and hope.
The impact of Upper Cumberland Foster Closet is made possible through strong community partnerships and dedicated volunteers.
Local organizations, schools, churches, and businesses come together to support the mission, alongside individuals who give their time, resources, and financial support.
Consistent monthly donors play a critical role in sustaining operations, allowing the organization to plan ahead and respond quickly when families need help the most.
As the need for foster care support continues to grow, sustainability remains a top priority. Annual events like Chips for Charity, along with back-to-school and holiday initiatives, help ensure the Foster Closet can continue serving families year-round.
Looking to the future, the organization hopes to expand its reach even further, with long-term goals that include creating a respite home for children entering care, providing a stable and safe environment during times of transition.
