After More Than Three Decades in Law Enforcement, Sheriff Eddie Farris Remains Focused on Serving Putnam County
Protecting the community he has called home his entire life has remained the driving force behind Putnam County Sheriff Eddie Farris’ decades-long career in law enforcement. Rooted in experience, leadership, and public service, Farris has spent more than three decades working to serve and safeguard the citizens of Putnam County.
After graduating from Cookeville High School, Farris attended East Tennessee State University, where his first Criminal Justice class sparked an interest in law enforcement that would eventually shape his career. He returned to Putnam County in 1989 to begin his career with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Jerry Abston before later serving with the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Throughout his career, Farris has investigated some of the state’s most complex cases, including violent crimes, narcotics investigations, public corruption cases, and large-scale fraud schemes. His service on the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force provided additional experience working alongside federal, state, and local agencies, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in protecting communities.
“I believe leadership is built through experience, accountability, and learning from both successes and challenges,” Farris shared.

That philosophy has guided his approach as Sheriff. During his tenure, Farris says one of his proudest accomplishments has been the continued growth and professionalism of the department. The agency has earned and maintained state accreditation while expanding training opportunities, investing in technology, strengthening school safety initiatives, and enhancing specialized units designed to better serve the community.
Farris credits much of the department’s success to the dedicated men and women who serve alongside him.
“Law enforcement is a team effort,” he said. “The accomplishments of this office are the result of committed professionals who care deeply about serving our community.”
As Putnam County continues experiencing rapid growth, Farris says the Sheriff’s Office must continue adapting to meet the increasing demands placed on public safety services.
“One of the biggest challenges is keeping pace with growth while continuing to provide the level of service our citizens deserve,” he explained.
Farris also emphasized the importance of maintaining trust and accessibility throughout the community through outreach, school involvement, and ongoing partnerships with local organizations. He believes strong relationships between law enforcement and the public are essential to creating a safer community for everyone.
“Putnam County is my home,” Farris said. “Being trusted by the citizens of this county to serve as Sheriff is something I never take for granted.”
Looking ahead, Farris says the department will continue prioritizing professionalism, training, school safety, drug enforcement, and community partnerships while remaining focused on its core mission of protecting and serving Putnam County families.
