The Voice of Cookeville: Philip Gibbons

With a career in radio spanning more than 50 years, Philip Gibbons remains one of the most recognizable and respected voices in Cookeville. In 2022, he was honored as one of Cookeville Lifestyle’s Most Influential People in our premiere issue, a distinction that reflected decades of service, leadership, and connection within the Upper Cumberland. As we reflect in 2026, Philip’s influence continues to echo throughout the community he has helped shape.

Philip’s passion for broadcasting began at a young age. “I had a fascination with radio and TV from very early on,” he shared. “I would mimic announcers’ voices for my parents and always knew I wanted to be in broadcasting.”

Before he was old enough to drive, Philip was already hosting his own evening radio show from 8–11 p.m. on WPTN-FM, call letters that remain closely tied to Cookeville radio today through Zimmer Broadcasting. That early opportunity marked the beginning of a lifelong career behind the microphone.

Over the years, Philip steadily climbed the ranks, ultimately becoming the longtime midday host on 94.7 The Country Giant, where his voice became a daily companion for listeners across the region. His career highlights include induction into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame, serving as a guest announcer at the Grand Ole Opry for 13 consecutive years, and interviewing some of country music’s biggest stars, including Garth Brooks.

“I got to interview Garth backstage at Bridgestone Arena,” Philip recalled. “My family and I spent time with him and Trisha Yearwood just talking. It was surreal.”

Philip’s impact reaches far beyond radio. Since 1983, he has served as the public address announcer for Tennessee Tech football, as well as Tech women’s basketball games. His voice is also a familiar presence at major community events throughout Cookeville, including the Pink Gala, Cookeville Regional Foundation’s A Woman’s Heart, and Habitat for Humanity luncheons.

When asked what advice he would give to those entering broadcasting today, Philip emphasized adaptability. “Be willing to adjust to the ever-changing landscape of journalism,” he said. “Be humble, start wherever you can, and understand that the path looks very different than it did even 10 years ago. Adapting is everything.”

Outside of his professional life, Philip treasures time with his wife, two daughters, and grandchildren. Those who know him often say the same thing: If you know him, you love him.

More than five decades into his career, Philip Gibbons continues to be a defining voice in Cookeville — one that has not only narrated moments, but helped build a sense of community, connection, and pride across the Upper Cumberland.
