Sometimes, all it takes is a single idea to spark meaningful change. When Cigi England envisioned creating an all-inclusive hub for people with disabilities, she had no idea just how monumental an impact it would have on so many lives.
Just two years after that initial idea, a community coffee shop opened its doors—aptly named The Exceptional Bean. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit employs more than 36 individuals with disabilities, all while fostering an environment intentionally designed to meet their unique needs.
Cigi’s passion for serving special needs families was ignited during her time as a volunteer with Rising Above Ministries. From there, her involvement naturally deepened, and she formed close friendships with several individuals with disabilities and their families.
“I started to notice that the world just isn’t built for people with disabilities,” Cigi said. “You really have to plan when you go somewhere—asking if there’s a ramp, an elevator, accessible bathrooms, and so much more.”
Through these relationships, Cigi also gained a deeper understanding of why so many individuals with disabilities struggle with mental health challenges. “The overwhelming sentiment across the special needs community is that they just want a job,” she explained. “They want to have a purpose.”
With The Exceptional Bean, Cigi helped create exactly that—a place of employment rooted in community, coffee, and character. While the vision began with her, Cigi is quick to credit the Cookeville community for bringing it to life. Local individuals and businesses sponsored nearly everything inside the café, helping raise more than $80,000 in donations to support its launch.
Already an established entrepreneur in Cookeville, many recognize Cigi as the owner of Cigi’s, a women’s boutique she opened in 2014 and continues to operate today. Her experience as a small business owner has undoubtedly prepared her for the many responsibilities she now carries as founder and board president of The Exceptional Bean.
In recognition of her leadership, vision, and community impact, Cigi was featured on the cover of Cookeville Lifestyle Magazine’s premiere edition and honored as one of the magazine’s Most Influential People.
